Common Questions

What does the POND model do?

The POND model simulates the growth and production of varies species in pond culture, including shrimp, oysters and seabream, taking into account the farm layout, cost of seed, cultivation characteristics (species, stocking specifications, culture period) and pond characteristics (water temperature, salinity, chlorophyll, dissolved oxygen, etc) and calculates the harvestable biomass.

The POND model provides three types of management outputs:

  • A production analysis;
  • An environmental analysis;
  • A pond mass balance analysis.

Why use the POND model?

POND provides commercial onshore aquaculture farms with an innovative and cost effective approach to analyse production and the environmental components of pond culture, water quality and effluent quality.

POND allows aquaculture managers to demonstrate compliance with certification programmes and international standards.

Why use the POND model?

POND simulates for shrimp, oysters and seabream aquaculture at moment. The model will be expanded to include other important farmed species in onshore aquaculture, such as tilapia and also simulates for Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA).

  • Pacific White Shrimp - Litopenaeus vannamei;
  • Indian Shrimp - Fenneropenaeus indicus;
  • Pacific Oyster - Crassostrea gigas;
  • Giant Tiger Prawn - Penaeus monodon (in progress);
  • Nile Tilapia - Oreochromis niloticus (in progress).

Why use the POND model?

The intended application of POND is for onshore aquaculture farms. We are expanding the model to include the most important species cultivated in ponds. POND can address issues relating to pond aquaculture faced by a variety of sectors, including:

  • Aquaculture farms;
  • Small-scale shrimp cooperatives;
  • Development and food security programs;
  • Regulatory and licencing bodies;
  • Insurance and financial institutions;
  • Academic projects.

How can I obtain POND?

We sell the application of POND as a service. POND simulates for a range of aquaculture growing conditions and we calibrate the model to suit each client's growing characteristics. Once POND is calibrated we provide the client with a licence.

  • Sell the application of POND as a service;
  • Calibrate POND for growing conditions;
  • Provide guidance about data requirements;
  • Apply POND to a production cycle and provide recommendations;
  • Provide a licence for usage.

What data do I need?

Most of the inputs are the pond characteristics and many aquaculture farms monitor the driver data to run the model.

  • Water temperature;
  • Salinity;
  • Chlorophyll a;
  • Particulate Organic Matter (POM);
  • Total Particulate Matter (TPM);
  • Dissolved Oxygen (DO);
  • Dissolved Inorganic Nitrogen (DIN);
  • Wind Speed.

What operating systems can POND run on?

POND can run on any Windows operating system.

If you are running POND on Windows 7 or Windows Vista you need to do the following:

  • After installing the software, right-click on the program icon;
  • Select the "Compatibility" tab;
  • Check the box "Run this program in compatibility mode for";
  • Select "Windows XP Service Pack 3".

If applicable also check the following:

  • Disable visual themes;
