IDREEM (Increasing Industrial Resource Efficiency in European Mariculture) is an EU Seventh Framework Programme project bringing together some of the leading aquaculture producers to implement Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture on a commercial scale.
IDREEM will create a smarter greener growth for one of Europe's most important industrial sectors: the aquaculture industry. IDREEM will achieve this through taking waste streams that are presently lost to the environment (as pollution) and converting them into secondary raw materials for the production of high value organisms such as seaweed and shellfish.
IDREEM will develop, demonstrate and benchmark innovative production technology for the European aquaculture industry. Aquaculture is now a major component of global food security and is the fastest growing food production sector globally.
IDREEM will work with a range of aquaculture farms around Europe to develop, deploy and quantitatively assess Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture, Life Cycle Assessment and life cycle costing will be used to quantify and demonstrate the economic and environmental benefits.
